It was put together by an amazing group of people who believe in the value of preserving the memories from this special year and they deserve our utmost gratitude. This year was special for many reasons, both at Caltech and the world at large: amazing sports seasons, revolutionary scientific discoveries, and the prelude to one of the most controversial elections in recent history. We particularly enjoyed putting together this book because it was our last year at Caltech. Choosing the theme for the last yearbook we would print was bitterweet; however, "Ignite" really stuck with us, because it encompasses what we hope you will take away from this yearbook. It is no secret that producing yearbooks at Caltech is hard. It requires a lot of time, effort, and money. However, due to the determination of a small group of people, during our tenure the yearbook has been converted to full color, is produced on a more timely scale, and has started to gain some notice among the student body. The amount of opposition we faced was difficult, but the job got done. With our last yearbook, we wanted to "ignite" a fire within the students to show you that you can do whatever you want. The road will be hard, but it will always be worth it. Everyone at Caltech is intelligent and capable of making a difference in the world - you just have to believe you can do it. We know that the main thing on your minds are problem sets, but, we hope that you will take a second to think about what you can do to make each year more amazing than the last, both at Caltech and in all the years to come. WHEN 012 | Fall T SEPTEMBER ENDS The carnival is an annual event that takes place on the eve of the first day of classes, a day to mourn the end of the summer and while "celebrat-ing" the beginning of a new year. It is held on Beck-man lawn and beckons the entire Caltech community to rejoice in mindless fun - whether that means you're trying to dunk your best friend into the dunk tank with a piercing throw or reaching new heights on the bungee trampoline. This year, with food galore and fun beyond what seems possible, it was a day you wouldn't want to miss. After a day full of ac-tivities, fun food like cotton candy, and a plethora of pointless yet entertaining arcade games, the night ended with a showing of the Jurassic World mov- works display that truly represented the magnitude of our sadness to see the summer end. What cross country, track, and being an intercollegiate athlete did for me more than anything was provide stability. It was a set 2-3 hours every day when you didn't have to worry about anything and when you do that, running becomes the most relaxing activity in the world. After that, coming early for preseason as a prefrosh helped me learn my way around and meet people before the massive rushes of frosh camp and rotation. If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring with you and why? If I were stranded on an island, I think I'd bring a boat or helicopter or something so I could leave. That and a map pinpointing my location and a satellite phone. Those three sound pretty good. Am I avoiding the point of this question? If you were running for presi-dent, what would your slogan be? My mom is one of my strongest role models. She's never intimidated by obstacles in life. Eight years ago, she returned to graduate school at 48 years old to get a new masters in psychotherapy, and has successfully built her own private practice since then. She has also only recently picked up running, but has run three miles every morning for the past year and is now in the best shape of her life. She takes risks and stops at nothing to achieve her goals. What are your plans after Caltech? I'll be pursuing a Masters degree at UC Berkeley in the Information and Management Systems program to study data analytics. If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring with you and why? My acoustic guitar (even though I'm pretty terrible at playing) for portable music to keep my spirits up; a good book to pass the time (maybe The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut?); and, most im-portantly, my kitten Olive so I could have a buddy! Who is your role model? My parents. l also really look up to my friends and some professors here. How has running cross country and being a stu-dent-athlete influenced your time at Caltech? Being on the team definitely forced me to procrastinate less and organize my time better, so that has helped me with school, but the most significant thing it did was let me get to know people. Ive met some of my best friends through cross country! What are your plans after Caltech? Well I'm taking a year off to try to figure out what I want to do. Right now I'm thinking I'll apply to grad school in the fall, but I'm not sure for what yet. I intend to travel and do geo/bio jobs/internships. If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring with you and why? A water filter, because I'm practical. And a notebook and a pencil so I can draw and not go too crazy! In high school I was able to procrastinate and still finish everything I needed to, but at Caltech running cross country has made me appreciate every second I have to work. If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring with you and why? A book: I never have time to read, but I guess if I was stranded on an island I'd have plenty of time... A flare: Considering I'm stranded, I guess it would be a good thing to get rescued on the off chance that someone sees the flare and the even less likely possibility that they come rescue me A box of matches: There's nothing better than a nice bonfire on an island. Our teams biggest accomplishment was that we maintained a fair amount of determination and work ethic even though we might not have gotten the results we wanted during the season. What inspires you as an athlete? Playing with a group of friends that I enjoy spending time with and know very well inspires me to try my best both in practice and games as to not let my teammates down. What is your favorite thing about playing soccer? Studying abroad provides not only a break from Caltech, but an opportunity to have a new academic experience, travel to new places and make new friends. Students from Caltech studied at the University of Edinburgh, University College London, Cambridge University, and the Technical University of Denmark and used the opportunity to take classes not offered at Caltech. However, they also took advantage of the increased amounts of free time to travel to exotic places around Europe, getting a taste of the wide variety fascinating cultures. Every Diwali, Caltech's newest dance team - Dhamaka - never fails to impress. This year was no exception. Despite the winds and pouring rain, the team fired up the stage with a mix of some music favorites. This year, Dhamaka had a new cast of pertormers, as many members were freshman. However, all of the newest members were not afraid to step up to the challenge. One of Dhamaka's captains, Meghana Pagadala '16, expresses her delight: "I was so impressed with how excited, committed, and talented every Dhamakite was. Tech Naach is the oldest Bollywood dance group on campus; they bring Bollywood classics to life while also mixing in new songs that show why Bollywood babes are the best. On November 15, people attending the Diwali Show outside of Beckmann Institute Auditorium experienced a different California weather filled with rain, wind, and cold air. They embarked on a 10-day journey to immerse themselves in the society, culture, and people of India. The program was designed and led by faculty members of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar in the state of Gujarat. Through stimulating lectures and diverse field visits, Techers were able to learn about India's multi-faceted identity through topics that ranged from Bollywood to history and poetry. As you walk into Gates, you are in the lecture hall where Linus Pauling taught. When you go to the Athenaum, you are walking along the same path that Albert Einstein did. This year, Caltech continued to add to its rich scientific history; how-ever, it also made a little history in the athletic department. The men's basketball team won 7 SCIAC games this season, breaking the 1953-1954 record of 6 SCIAC games. They defeated Occidental College 3 times, which was another feat that has not been achieved since 1944-1945. They spent 22 days sharing the top position in conference standings. Nasser Al-Rayes '17 set the record for single-season blocks (64) and single-game blocks (8). The team also set the record for single-season points (1566), rebounds (951), and blocks (105). The boys started training for season early in fall and competed in sev-eral preseason matches. The first match was an exhibition game against Division I University of San Diego. This was the second year that Caltech played against a Division I opponent. More than 1000 people were in attendance (more than the undergraduate population!) and Caltech did not fail to disappoint. Kc Emezie '16 scored 14 points. Ricky Galliani '17 netted 13 points, while David LeBaron '17 and David Kawashima '18 recorded 5 and 3 assists, respectively. I've had a similar style as far as how linteract with players and invest in the students' well-being, but as we've improved over the years we're able to teach much more complex skills and implement high-level strategies. What do you think distinguished this season from past seasons that translated to so many conference wins? We've been fortunate to coach some very committed athletes and have grown our support base of fans dramati-cally. From recruiting to promoting our program to having a great coaching staff and people who truly care about we're doing, it all translates to success. You were recently named NABC Guardian of the Game. What did this honor mean to you? Oh, that was the greatest honor. I consider that the most prestigious award because it's more than basketball - it's about what we do off the court as edu-cators. Receiving the award during Final Four weekend amongst NBA and college coaches and players was the best. What were some difficult situations that you felt motivated the team's success this year? Anytime we don't come out on top at the end of a game we feel like we should win, it's difficult, but we take it all in stride and definitely use it all as inspiration. We challenged ourselves to improve and learn from it all. The non-conference is about preparing for conference and we can see how it influenced us down the stretch. Do you watch the NBA or college bas-ketball? If you do, who is your favorite team and /or favorite coach? Why? I watch all levels of basketball and have many teams and coaches I follow. They have different styles, and that's what is so great about basketball. Teams can be very good and very different. Right when I first started. I was beyond excited when my parents let me switch from swimming to basketball when I was 10. l had always wanted to try it before that. What was the hardest thing about the transition from high school basketball to Caltech basketball? The pace of the game increases signifi-cantly. The girls are all faster and stronger. If you could use one word to describe your basketball experience at Caltech, what would it be? Rewarding. Layout: Meghana Pagadala Women's Basketball 055 RACING With 10 school records falling at the SCIAC champion-ship meet, ending in the highest point total in recent memory, the men's swim team had an unprecedented season. After beginning the season in October with meets against Pomona-Pitzer, the Beavers continued to compete in conference dual meets through November and December. After a tough winter training, the team came back ready to go, and it showed in victories over Whittier College and Chapman University, as well as a heartbreaking one point loss to La Verne. The Beavers swam under the lights in their home pool against Occidental College on February 2 in a memorable Orange Out meet featuring a bevy of exciting races. Freshman Henry Steiner '19 led the charge, coming from behind to chase down an Oxy swimmer in the 200 IM for the victory, followed by a clutch first place finish in the 100 butterfly. "There were so many close swims, upsets, and out-touches that it kept the whole team on their feet the whole time. The men's teams even ended in a tie which was pretty crazy," recalls Dylan Lu '19 The season was capped by a memorable perfor- championships. The night ended with Eck '16, Kevin Yu '16, Steiner '19 and Jonathan Willett '19 setting yet another program mark in the 200 freestyle relay. The third day saw Steiner '19 set the 100 butterfly record, followed by Adam Dai '19 breaking the 100 breaststroke record from 1989 by over 1.5 seconds. The night was rounded out by the fresh-man quartet of Lu '19, Dai '19, Steiner '19 and Willett '19 setting a program recrod in the 400 medley relay. The meet concluded with three more records falling on the last day: the 200 backstroke by Lu '19, the 200 butterfly by Steiner '19 and the 400 freestyle relay by the team of Eck '16, Wil-lett '19, Lu '19 and Steiner "19. "During the four days I was there I felt totally absorbed in the meet. The atmosphere was amazing, and I was able to focus completely on my races and support my teammates. I think people do not realize the amount of time and effort that each swimmer takes to try and get better week after week. What inspires you as an athlete? My teammates are always a big part of my inspiration, especially the frosh. It is good to see people so excited and optimistic about swimming. We suffer, joke, play and have fun with each other and ultimately, my teammates are the ones I become closest to and they inspire me to keep pushing the boundaries. My inspiration as an athlete is to have fun. I first got into fencing cause I didn't enjoy other sports, and I really liked the idea of fighting with swords. Once I got into it, I realized I really liked to fence, but I winning always makes things better. So in order to do that, I tried my best to win as much as possible while I fenced. What is your favorite thing about fencing? My favorite thing about fencing is the fact that most people who fence are super friendly. At competitions you can meet people and become long lasting friends simply by noticing the same people at your local tournaments. Their performance of Frankie Valli's "December 1963" was a stand-out for the night with their bass soloist engaging the audience with his dance moves and smooth tone. The fourth and final non-Caltech group was USC Overflow - a group that has consistently wowed the Love Sucks audience in recent years. Their rendition of Mama's Broken Heart was most memorable, with a powerful female soloist and soulful backing. Closing Love Sucks 2016 was Caltech's Fluid Dynamics (FD), who made the audience laugh with a theatrical rendition of Rob Cantor's "Shia Lebeouf." Love Sucks | 069 Starring Caltech graduate student Kelvin Bates as Captain Kirk, co-playwright Cole Remmen as Mr. Spock, and Caltech alumnus Allen Corcorran as Dr. McCoy, the musical parody of Star Trek known as Boldly Go! took its viewers on a rollicking ride through outer space onboard the famed U.S.S. Enterprise, brimming with jokes for both the average theatergoer and the seasoned Star Trek fan, telling its story through song and dance. The entire production took over a year to prepare. The show was written by Grant Remmen, a Caltech graduate student in physics, and his brother Cole. The Remmens approached Brian Brophy, director of Theater Arts at Caltech, and who guest starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation, to produce and direct the show. Brophy agreed, inviting his acting friend and Star Trek: Voyager star Robert Picardo to play a cameo role in two performances of Boldly Go! We had a blend of older and younger players, and we definitely put our selves in a position to not only play our best baseball at the end of the scason, but also give the team momentum moving forward. What was the most memorable moment of the season? Every other year, we take a trip over Spring Break, and we went to Tucson. AZ this year for a long weekend. The Beavers' season started off strong when the team traveled to Minnesota for a tournament hosted by Macalester College, during which several program records were set. The tournament began with three losses, including a tough defeat to Monmouth Uni-versity, in which Soumya Kannan '16 had a program-record 7 exclusions drawn. However, in the final game against Macalester College, the Beavers notched their first victory. Katie Johnston '19 scored a program-record 9 goals and Mary Boyajian '17 added a program-record 6 assists during the game, with Johnston's performance earning her the recognition of SCIAC Female Athlete of hte Week. The conference season followed, and though the Beavers were unable to find a win, the conference season featured several close matches, including a 3-goal defeat to SCIAC powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. This year, I think it was that our ability to score goals increased a lot from previous years. I think within our first five or six games, we had probably outscored ourselves from last season. What was the most memorable moment of the season? Definitely winning our first game during our team trip to Minnesota against Macalester College. It was the first game the team has won since 2012 and the first since I've been at Caltech, so it was very memorable for me. What inspires you as an athlete? I am inspired by my coaches, teammates and opponents - my coaches and teammates because I want to live up to their expectations and do well for them, and my opponents because I want to beat them. My drive to accomplish all of that inspires me to work hard every day in practice What is your favorite thing about playing water polo? Water polo is a game that combines everything that sports are about - creativity, athleticism, teamwork and individual accom-plishment. Our team's biggest accomplishment this season was achieving a national ranking of #40 for DIII tennis programs. This marked the first time in history that the Caltech men's tennis team was nationally ranked, which was indeed the goal we had always set for the program. Achieving this was incredibly fulfilling for us as a team. What was the most memorable moment of the season? The most memorable moment of the season was beating conference rival Chapman on our Senior Day. During my four years on the team, we had close losses to Chapman, and to finally win on Senior Day with a 5-4 victoryw as an exciting moment for us all. What is your favorite thing about playing tennis? Tennis is a sport that incorporates both mind and body, testing the limits of both. I think it was pretty awesome that, even though we only had a team of 7, we overcame a rough start to the season to win several big matches and finish 6th in SCIAC. What was the most memorable moment of the season? When we beat Pacific. For every match we won Pacific answered with a win on their side, but we managed to pull ahead at the very end to win 5-4. What inspires you as an athlete? Improving. Every time I step onto the court, it's all about becoming a better player, both mentally and physically. No matter how much you train or practice there will always be things you can do better, and that's what motivates me to keep striving to reach the next level. Layout: Soumya Kannan Women's Tennis | 089 Reaching After experiencing a season of significant progress in 2015, the Caltech track and field team was eager to get back into competition. The season opened with the annual All-Comers Meet. Performances by Edward Garza '16 in the 100m dash, Morgan Hill '16 in the hammer throw and Lucy Chen '17 in the triple jump led the way for the Beavers. Freshman Rohan Choudhury impressed in his collegiate debut as well, placing third in both the 1500m and 3000m. The improvements just kept coming at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet. Rohan Choudhury '19 ran his way into the Caltech Top 10 all-time list, coming in at 7th with his performance in the 3000m. Elsewhere in track events, several Beavers dropped time across the board, from sprinting to distance events. At the Rossi Relays the following weekend, Michelle Marasigan '19 joined fellow freshman Choudhury on the Top 10 all-time list in the 3000m, clocking an 11:41.53 to place 9th on the list. After all of this, the Beavers were more than ready for conference competition to begin. At the first SCIAC Multi-Dual, the Beavers did not disappoint. Marasigan made her way onto another Top 10 list in the 800m, ranking ninth in program history. "The most memorable moment was when we all came together to watch Morgan break the school men's hammer record. Sometimes it can be hard to support our teammates when we have events at the same time, but we made sure to make it out to support Morgan at the culmination of all his hard work," recalls Muk-saan Goyal '19. After a stellar season, it was no suprise that Morgan Hill '16 placed third in the hammer throw at the SCIAC Championships to earn All-SCIAC recognition. At our first Oxy meet, it rained so hard that the teams had to seek refuge in the underground locker room for about an hour. Although several events were delayed/cancelled, it ended up being a fun team bonding experience. What movivates you as an athlete? I strive for continual self-improvement in all areas of my life, and athletics is no exception. I also like to run fast. What is your favorite thing about running track? My favorite thing about being a track and field athlete is the opportunity to meet and spend time with a group of individuals who strive for the same self-improvement that motivates me. Even though there were only 6 acts, each one of them was entertaining and amazing. OASIS Show started off with Caltech's Indian Classical Dance team, Aarya, who wowed the audience with their performance of A.R. Rahman and Vanessa Mae's "Raaga's Dance Song." Although Aarya only became a club this year, their choreography was out of this world as they personified musical instruments and snakes. Aarya's performance was followed by a vocal piece by Amer Kothari and dance number by Chandru Dhandpani and Bhawna Motwani. After intermission, the show resumed with a Carnatic performance including Anupama Lakshmanan and Aadith Moorthy '18 singing, Siddarth Prasad '19 playing the flute, Vasant lyer '17 playing the violin and Arun Chandra '16 playing the tabla. After their melodious performance, Caltech's first Bollywood dance team, Tech Naach, performed. The all-girls dance team was full of sass, grace, and fun as they performed to "Cinema Choopistha Mama" and "Pinga." It is a day that most underclassmen wait for and a day that all seniors prepare for. Although technically only seniors and administration know the exact date of Ditch Day, most under-classmen know when the day is getting close. This year, Ditch Day was on May 29th. Each house has different traditions for Ditch Day. However, in each house, underclassmen are awakened around 8:00 AM. Excited and anxious, underclassmen sign up for "stacks." Back in the day, under-classmen would break into seniors' room during Ditch Day. To prevent underclass-men from destroying their rooms, seniors would "stack" objects in front of the doors and also leave puzzles. This year, the tradition continued. On each of the four different senior dinner days, seniors had a great time relaxing and celebrating with their fellow classmates. On June 10, Caltech's Class of 2016 had to say goodbye to college. Caltech is a difficult academic experience and many graduates celebrate the end of it, but no one can dispute that Caltech is a special and unique place and that the friendly environment would be missed. As the faculty and graduates lined up and walked down Beckman lawn, there was excitement in the air. Families, staff members, and underclassmen gathered to cheer on their friends and loved ones. After everyone was seated, the ceremony began. This year's commencement speaker was Dr. Atul Gawande, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and writer at The New Yorker. Dr. Gawande congratulated the graduating seniors, but also forced them to think about the challenges they would face in the outside world: "Even more than what you think, how you think matters. The stakes for understanding this could not be higher than they are today, because we are not just battling for what it means to be scientists. We are battling for what it means to be citizens. Afterwards, the Class of 2016 lined up to get their diplomas and shake hands with President Thomas Rosenbaum. This year, Frances Arnold, professor of ChemE, BioE, and Bio-chemistry, was awarded the Millennium Technology Prize for her CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL ENGINEERING The Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Division ignites passion in its researchers, who seek to establish and manipulate the chemical reactions that govern our world. From senior undergraduates Kurtis Carsch, who was awarded a Hertz Fellowship, and Ayush Gupta, who received the Library Friends' Senior Thesis Prize, to Mikhail Shapiro, the assistant professor of chemical engineering who was selected as a 2016 Pew Scholar to support his research program to use ultrasound to locate microbes in the body, Caltech's researchers and faculty demonstrate our university's unrivaled mastery of chemistry. GEOLOGY & PLANETARY SCIENCE Though the eternity and extreme size of the cosmos appear daunting, Caltech's Geology and Planetary Sciences department manages to push the envelope, developing new and innovative methods for understanding our Universe. Exciting news came from the GPS department this year as Caltech researchers Kon-stantin Batygin and Mike Brown found convincing evidence of a ninth planet that traces a highly eccentric orbit around the sun at a distance twenty times that of Neptune. In other news, John Eller, professor of geology and geochemistry and director of the Caltech Microanalysis Center, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for his studies of the origin and evolution of meteorites. PHYSICS, MATHEMATICS & ASTRONOMY Caltech's Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy goes above and beyond; its near-constant success-stories and fun quirks delight all members of the Caltech community. This year, Hirosi Ooguri, professor of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, served as a science advisor for the Man from 9 Dimensions, a 3D movie produced by Japan's National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. In other news, professor of mathematics Nets Katz received the 2015 Clay Research Award from the Clay Mathematics Institute for his solution of the Erdos distance problem among other contributions to combinatorial incidence geometry. The awards don't stop there. Fiona Harrison, professor of physics and Chair of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy was selected to receive the 2016 Massey Award for her work on NASA's NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) mis-sion, while Arthur McDonald, PhD '70, won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery that neutrinos can "change their identi-ties" as they travel through space. ENGINEERING & APPLIED SCIENCES Interdisciplinary principles are taken to their extremes at Caltech's Division of Engineering and Applied Science, which aims to tackle the world's most challenging, fundamental scientific problems. The EAS department continued its long-standing pattern of success this year, as Ares Rosakis, professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2016 for his discipline-spanning research "from seismology to micro-electronic device reliability". Oscar Bruno, professor of applied and computational mathematics, was named a National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellows by the US Department of Defense for his top-tier work in developing high-perfor-mance simulation software. Additionally, Thomas Vidick, assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences, was named an Air Force Young Investigator, receiving a grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for his work on quantum networks. HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES Human culture, sociopolitical behavior, decision-making - all are analyzed with intense academic rigor and curious insight by Caltech's Humanities and Social Sciences division. Spanning economics, history, political science, philosophy, and business, Caltech's HSS department is frequently recognized for its great-ness. This year, Janet C. Campagna (MS 85 and CEO of QS Investors) was named a Caltech Distinguished Alumna for her contributions to quantitative investment and for her leadership in the financial industry, while The Association of American Publishers conferred the 2016 Award for Excellence in Physical Sciences & Mathematics to Princeton University Press for the digital edition of The Collected Papers of Robert Einstein.
