We certainly hope so. The motto of this year's Big T might be summarized, "captions speak louder than words". While we have striven to give every photo an informative caption, the usual yearbook text has been largely omitted. In doing this, we hope to make the 65th Big T a much more visual experience than the previous 64 have been. We have included text where we felt it necessary, quotes where we felt it appropriate, and editorial comment where we felt like it (i.e., nowhere). Captions, unless otherwise noted, list persons from left to right. In order to increase the visual effect of this book, special care was taken with every photograph. Each photograph in the book was individually screen-ed, so we had some tough dealines to meet (e.g., the color section had to be done by February 12). We apologize if any of the coverage in this book seems a bit scant; we made a few necessary sacrifices. As far as the organization of the book goes, we have returned to ancient ways. There is a faculty section for the first time in many years. After all, Dr. Feynman isn't the only faculty member around here deserving credit! The faculty members have been grouped by department, as have the seniors. We hope that our efforts have not been in vain. Sit back and enjoy your yearbook, and may every picture be worth a thousand words. To everyone's relief, however, the frosh (and their butts) returned just in time for Rota-tion. In fact, they got back just in time for "Rotation Violations." 8 1/2 Rotation violations, that is, or should I say "8 1/2 non-party"? At any rate, we all learned the new definition of the term "House". Speaking of new definitions, Ed says that "felch" is defined as...oh, uh, you better ask him about that one. Anyway, Fleming soon picked the largest frosh class in recent memory (not to mention some of the largest frosh in recent memory). In true Animal House style, frosh nicknames were the ticket at formal dinner--Buttcheese and Bongobutt were the only names that stuck...and for obvious reasons, too. Damage soon whipped these lowly frosh into shape. Mere moments after they entered Fleming, he forced them to take every last scrap of toilet paper on campus and dangle it from the trees of page. Later, the frosh embarrassed themselves by giving Mikey one of the slowest Grand Tours imaginable; Frank, on the other hand, went through in about two Of course, boys will be boys, so first term page bravely started what has to be one of the lamest "RF Wars" in history, lasting for more than a term and finally ending with the Fat Lady giving us the big buttrape. However, the Fat Lady eventually changed her mind-- "Is that strawberry lipstick on your ass there, Ed? I hear the Fat Lady wears strawberry lipstick…" So things turned out well "in the end," and our friendly relations with the limpdicks across the Olive Walk continued as before. In a display of further interhouse love and brotherhood, Lloyd came over and sat on every last one of our toilets. We tried really hard to get "steamed" at them for that, but finally we just said "fuck it" and started throwing them into the showers. Our toilets never recovered from the shock. Earl then challenged our frosh to wash him, but his rules were so lame /i.e., "no nelsons, no rough stuff, and absolutley no grabbing my penis...") that he was quickly ignored Fecathlon, the competition for real men, soon rolled around Alley 1 came in first, proving that skill beats honesty any day. The Baseball Furies of Alley 4 made a weak fifth place showing. One quiet weekend, the more destructively inclined Flems descended on the Villa and left it in ruins. Scooter learned a valuable lesson that night: do not walk up to a cop if you are carrying a machete. ("That's a good way to get yourself shot, son.") There was a big, slimy log in the courtyard and a water wheel that spun almost as fast as a Lloydie sitting on a pencil and a crappy play and lumberjacks and people "logging on" and Shaker runs and a drunk RA and then it was over and not a moment too soon And there were other first term happenings, too. Helgren saw the light at the end of the butthole and decided to transfer to Fleming. Seven Juniors challenged thirty-some frosh to a showering war, and seven wet Juniors declared themselves the victors later that night. Country Club showed up, but page didn't because they were too busy having a circle jerk in their lounge. And naturally, the Big Red Sports Machine stomped on the other houses in Interhouse sports, placing first in softball and second in both soccer and swimming. Second term soon reared its ugly head, and so did the "new and improved" Chaz the Spaz. GSC Basketball started up, causing people to wonder if Classic really was better than New Formula-most people, however, really didn't give a shit. Rumor had it that a frosh named Rob transferred in from some other house, but I doubt that it was true. Aside from that, nothing exciting happened. On a larger scale, ASCIT elections slimed their way into our consciousness, making many wonder, "Are the elections fixed or is the rest of Caltech really that stupid?" Due to "technical difficulties," page decided to withdraw from Discobolus; stupidity remained the hallmark of the page officers. Fleming, of course, coasted to its third straight Discobolus trophy. A second in Interhouse track and a first in volleyball made Animal Meal 1986 that much more likely. House meetings became the fad in Fleming. "I would just like to remind you that I am in complete agreeance with the last eight people who have spoken, so let's take a preliminary vote...." "Okay, now all traitors to Fleming House please step forward...." Just remember, if you have something completely stupid to say, please don't hesitate to raise your hand and let the House know. . Fleming 165 And then, without warning, they stole it. Those sticky cum-blobs stole the most important thing in Fleming House. Everyone noticed its absence, and everyone was pissed at the smelly shitheads responsible for such a hideous crime. Yes, when the frosh stole Bill's pet feeding dish, we all got mighty angry. But he bought a new one, and harmony was restored. Spring Break arrived just in time for flailing upperclassmen and flaming frosh alike.In fact, more than one frosh took a break that would last longer than just the spring. At any rate, some people went home and some went skiing. Even the Fleming Cannon took a vaca-tion, but then the nice fellows at that Harvey something-or-other school brought it back to us before we even realized it was gone. Also, and somewhat surprisingly, Randy "please float me again, my testicles are still dry" Pollock decided his problems weren't big enough already, and so he transferred to Blacker. Slovik finally got his ass in gear and brought us Indoor Olympiad. The Juniors lost no time in giving every other class "a good, old-fashioned butt-kicking." No one hacked in the bottle this year, but Rhodehamel did do some strange things to it with his tongue (maybe he practiced with Vicki beforehand). Outdoor Olympiad followed soon after, and the seniors showed that they had the leather balls to win something after all. The frosh stumbled into second, the juniors hobbled in to third and the sophomores...well, it was a "moral victory" for the sophomores. In Interhouse, Captain Zed led his thundering herd of Fearless Buttplug Extractors to first place ties in both basketball and football; not to be outdone, the Fleming tennis team scratched and clawed its way to an awesome fourth-place tie. And do you know what all this amazing sports action means, boys and girls? That's right, it means... ...Animal Meal. It was the nth such occurrence in n plus 1 years, where n is on the order of two. Quite simply, it was a true orgy of animalistic violence and lust (actually, there wasn't very much lust), and it was a slimy good time for everyone except those that cleaned up. I had many friends there, and seeing them day after day, and night after night (not mornings, of course), they became my family away from family." Control yourself, Matt. 175 2 LLOY 4 SPORTS Once again Lloyd House had a good year in sports, from Interhouse competitions to Discobolus challenges. The highest point of the year was winning Interhouse tennis by going undefeated 6-0, thanks to the leadership of our seniors. Our performance in the rest of the interhouse competitions was solid if not spectacular, from our 3-3 season in football to the enthusiastic participation in basketball Lloyd House did very well in Discobolus competition and was in contention for the Discobolus trophy throughout the year. At one point, we were in second place behind Fleming before losing a close game of kickball against them which prevented us from taking first place. Finally, Lloyd House introduced kickball as a new sport on campus. It turned out to be fun, playing two exciting games against Fleming and Ricketts. The theme was a 1920's Speakeasy, with pleny of shooting, gambling, and dancing girls. In January, we went to Big Bear for a ski trip. We all had fun, including those who were standing on our skis and those who were "roll-ing" down the hill. At the end of the year, we brought Fingal with us to the beach for our traditional bonfire and only roasted a few frosh. We also has our share of Alley Challenges. Jello snorfing, paper airplane contest, white water rafting on Millikan Pond, Sumo wrestling and dizzy bad kept us pretty busy all year. Other things we did this year to forget our homework included Thursday "Yum Yum" Night, bowling night, dance parties, and R.A. picnic.... Overall, we had a year of fun and excite-ment. Fasten your seatbelts, sit back, and enjoy your tour. Ricketts 195 Our first stop is the Apache (pronounced a-pach-i) dance, said to be the biggest social event of the fiscal year. Pay careful attention to the natives, for they are unique. Note the connoisseurs of fine food (1986 was a fine year for French bread). See the band of strange music-makers known only as Snotty Scotty and the Hankies (they brought along their friends, Nosecreek). Notice the happy natives, dressed in their tough clothes. The Apache party also features an advanced heating system, although some choose to huddle together for warmth. This unique party features a strange ritual known as the "Garter Contest", a kind of mathematical pastime whose origins are unknown. It seems that the "Seniors" take a one day vacation, causing the other natives (the so-called "underclassmen" or "wimps") to work all the harder. Of course, some of this work is not too hard, and it all enjoys considerable press coverage. Some of the work done is a full fifteen years ahead of its time. There are always troublemakers, however, who find it necessary to protest while others are busily studying aeronautics or fluid dynamics. Now, on your right notice the freshman, the Class of '89. The best way to describe this class is "all wet." It might be in the showers, in LD, or in Millikan pond (note that the pond was dry until they got there), but this class is never far away from that wet stuff. Ruddock in Review 1986 was another wonderful year to go into the history of Ruddock House. The year began with the welcoming of the incoming frosh during hassle week. This year, no one even suspected the true pledgemaster, Lloyd, until the last day, when it was too late for the frosh to accomplish their mission. Nevertheless, the traditional introduction of frosh had been done. Along with the frosh, we welcomed new RA's, Ed and Amy Callaway. Once the preliminaries were out of the way, the real business of Ruddock House began. This year Bonzo introduced us to the Potato GAAC, in which each alley attempted to rush its potato along the specified route to the courtyard. Unfortunately, Berkeley South alley tried a shortcut through the Lloyd House RA's window. In the wake of the GAAC, bits of raw potato were scattered all over the place between the Court of Man and Ruddock House, and Bonzo was seen bathing in Baxter pond. Interhouse this year revived the tradition of flooding the courtyard. The theme for this year's monstrosity was the Titanic, complete with a working lifeboat, moving iceberg, and posh lounge. Construction proceeded smoothly under the direction of Grand Dragon Taney. Highlights included Dancin' Hansen from KKHR-FM to play the tunes, and the debut of the Fog Horns. D B Catch any fish, Bonzo? VISITOR Wayne and a rare dinner guest. Ruddock 207 Eigen, a proud mother of four Ahoy there! The Fleming scoreboard made a guest appearance at dinner, courtesy of the Page-boys who left it in our care. The Fleming-style dinner also coincided with the re-rotation of the Moles, who were fleeing the mud-bath of their own dining room. After its appearance in Ruddock, the scoreboard was rumoured to have attended lecture in 22 Gates ... with a few modifications, of course. A new sight in Ruddock was the Saturn Alley beautification project. Appropriately titled "Mural", the reproduction of Joan Miró's painting began appearing on the walls of alley six over winter vacation under the guidance and paintbrush of Kathy H-bar. Work continued throughout the year with the help of Kiyo and Wayne. This year's Senior-Underclassmen drink-off took place in mid-April.. after the pre-frosh weekend. The seniors claim to have won, 124 to 115 ounces, a result still under investigation. The arrival of Ditch Day brought welcome relief to both underclassmen and seniors alike ... that is, after the seniors quit wasting time with fakes. Movie themes were especially popular this year, including "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", (Taylor, Doughboy, and Reamio - respectively) "Back to Joe's Future", (Alan) and "Kobayashi Maru - Star Trek Stack" (Taney and BPO). Ruddock's contribution to the solution of world hunger came in the form of Bonzo, Paul, and Steve's "Cor-nucopia" stack. Counter-stacking took a back seat to acceptance of bribes, much to the relief of the seniors who returned at five o'clock. Despite valiant efforts, the Ruddock sports machine was unable to defend its Interhouse Championship suc-cessfully. Still, we were able to pull off some satisfying victories, including wins over Fleming in basket-ball, Blacker in volleyball, and Fleming in football. In local events, Cheng won the Ruddock ping-pong cham-pionship, defeating Hungse in a close match. Throughout the year, Ruddock parties were the place to be. An unusually large number of multi-house parties were thrown this year, including ones with Blacker, Lloyd, Page, and even Fleming. The traditional frosh party was a blast, although unfounded rumours of a Fishbone concert attracted hordes of high-schoolers. As always, alley challenges were both fun and fierce. Highlights this year included new feats of skill such as "Spud Drop on Veep", along with old favorites like "The Roomate Game" and "Capture the Flag". The season did have its dull moments, such as the ill-fated "Snowball-Fight-Turned-Beach-Challenge" which was never able to solve its weather problem. The second annual Alley Wars was a smashing success, despite spawning hours of "peacetime" indoor skirmishes. For many days, it was unsafe to wander the halls without arming oneself with either water balloons or a water machine gun. ELECTIONS The annual house elections were held on a rainy Valentine's night near the beginning of second term. Although there were demands for closed elections the seniors opted for the open variety, similar to those held last year. The evening began with a dinner of pizza, beer and soft drinks, followed by the casting of votes and nominations for important house offices As the night came to an end with the election of the new librarian, a security guard entered the room and "arrested" Doughboy, who then tried to escape to Bonzo's car. However, Bonzo seemed to have some sort of car trouble, like a missing distributor cap. Nevertheless, Doughboy escaped the showers. Installations took place a week later. Many of the members are parents of current or former Caltech students, or are families of staff members of Caltech or JPL, but any person sympathetic to students is cordially invited to join. Some of the League's contributions to the Caltech community this last year includes: Freshman Parents' Day In cooperation with the Institute, the Service League sponsors a freshman parents' day, an orientation program to introduce freshman parents to the Caltech community. This all-day event features a panel discussion, lunch, a tour of the campus and a tea. Student Activities The League gives financial aid to student groups such as the Glee Club, various instrumental groups, the ASCIT drama production, the California Tech, the little t, the Big T, and the Caltech Y. Decompression Evenings In cooperation with the Caltech Y, the Service League has helped with "Decompression Evenings," an open house in Winnett Student Center during each of the final examination periods. All students are invited to take a break from study and drop in for conversation, music, games and a snack. Ther Service League gives a financial donation toward the supply of food, such as milk, fresh fruit and vegetables. Thanksgiving Turkeys During the Thanksgiving Holiday, a roasted turkey is delivered to each student house. Some financial donation is given toward a dinner in the co-op houses. Health Center To make a student's stay more pleasant, the Service League provides items such as juices, soups, robes, pajamas, newspapers and magazines, and occasionally, such things as heating pads. A microwave oven was donated in memory of Doris DuBridge. Members also assist the Health Center staff on occasions such as the flu clinic when volunteer workers are needed. Christmas Boxes The League places in each student house a large box of homemade cookies and other treats for the students who remain on campus during the Christmas holiday. Well Baby Clinic Children up to age two of students and research fellows may receive checkups and immunization free of charge at this clinic. Baby Furniture Students may borrow cribs, strollers and other equipment needed by their small children. If the supply is large enough, research fellows and visitors to the Institute may also use this equipment. Plant and Bake Sale To augment its income, the Service League holds Plant and Bake Sales thoughout the year. June is drawing to a close, and so is the 65th Anniversary Edition. It's been a long, hard battle, but I'm happy to say that the 1986 Big T was completed on time (for the first time in twenty years or so) and within the budget (for the first time in at least four years). For those who dare, it is a possible if not extremely probable task. I'd like to thank everyone and everything that made this possible. First and foremost, I'd like to thank Corey Mundwiler, our Taylor Publishing Company representative. We negotiated with three different publishing companies this year, and we were extremely impressed with Corey's integrity. We have not been disappointed in the least; Corey has been as helpful as possible at every juncture, from extra printing runs to second proofs.
