The California Institute of Technology's campus lies nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. From the oldest tree on campus, the Engelman Oak, to the newest building, Sherman Fairchild Library, the campus is a beautiful haven from the daily grind of classes and studies. As students sweat through classes like AMa 95 (aka "The Shaft") they can at least enjoy the walk there. Many of the older buildings, like the South Houses, are of the classical Spanish Mission style, with stuccoed walls and tiled roofs. Newer buildings, like Avery house, have returned to this style. The grounds are complemented by many rosebushes. Since the bushes rarely stop blooming in the balmy Mediterranean climate, students can always stop and smell the roses when classes get too tough! 2 Opening To far left, top - The setting sun bathes Beckman Auditorium and the Court of Mann in color. New students were truly welcomed to Caltech during "Frosh Camp," held every year at Camp Fox on Catalina Island It was an exciting series of experiences: from leaving Tech at 6am, herded onto the buses by new Dean Jean-Paul Revel who enthusiastically gave directions through his megaphone, to the trip back to the mainland, when a school of dolphins surrounded the boat, prompting an impromtu lecture from biologist Revel (foreshadowing the lectures he would give in Bil during third term.) While on the island, students met in small groups to discuss life at Tech with older students, designed boats for the annual competition, learned about classes and options, swam, attended seminars on the Honor Code, Challenges & Choices at Caltech, and Diversity at Caltech, hiked, watched bonfires, ponded (oceaned?) the ASCIT President, and complained about the food. (What are those flecks in the Kool-aid, anyway?) It provided a welcome break from the pace of the newly-implemented Caltech la, and relaxed all the freshman before classes. 4 Opening Right: Nasim Afsarmanesh leads a discussion of life at Caltech. RSON: OF Opening 5 Welcome to Avery House Avery House, donated by millionaire R. Stanton Avery, opened its doors to undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty this year. Despite concerns about house rules and government, Avery has developed into a place where SODV restrictions on painting the walls produced a surprising mural made of Post-It™ Notes. The food at Avery is always excellent, and in addition to a cafeteria, it boasts the Avery Cafe, open late for coffee and pizza. Above: R. Right: Students enjoy the board food at Avery. 6 Opening From its moving bookshelves to the laptops available for signout, Sherman Fairchild Library is a welcome addition to Caltech. Far more aesthetically pleasing than Millikan Library, the new building has taken the strain off of Millikan's stretched space. Funded by the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, the library makes full use of the card system also in place at Avery. Students and faculty can use their identification card to enter after normal hours, make photocopies, and check out books. Top left: Sherman Fairchild Library awaits opening. This year it was May 16th. The object: seniors "stack" their rooms and underclassmen spend the day out of classes solving puzzles, acting out scenes and wreaking destruction to get in. Inside the stack is a bribe, a prize for completing the stack. If either the stack or the bribe fails to please the underclassmen, they can "counter-stack," providing a surprise for the seniors when they return at 5pm. SURFS Up! Most students choose Caltech because of the opportunities to do research as undergraduates. The SURF program was established to encourage the interaction of students and faculty around a research problem of mutual interest. In collaboration with their mentors, students write proposals for the work they want to do. A faculty committee reviews the proposals, and awards are made on the basis of reviewer recommendations. Students do their research projects during the summer and, at the conclusion, they submit a technical paper and give an oral presentation at SURF Seminar Day. Seminar Day is modeled on a professional technical meeting with more than 20 parallel sessions and poster presentations. SURF students participate in many activities including weekly research seminars, professional development discussions, social and cultural activities. Students also may attend conferences such as the National Conference on Undergraduate Research or the Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research, as well as professional conferences with their mentors. Many students were transfering out of Caltech altogether. Raw Owen became the chair of an ad hoc committee to make suggestions on how to approve life at Caltech. Their first decision was to make freshman year pass/fail. Two years later, when they met again, they suggested admitting women to Caltech. The administration and the Board of Trustees finally decided to admit women with the incoming class of 1970-1. They had taken all necessary precautions, however. To allay the fears of those who thought that women would be taking away valuable spaces from male students, they enlarged the class from 200 to 220 students. The first year went well, and it wasn't long before all were accepted as Techers, and not given leeway as women. They participated in showering wars, just like everyone else. At some point in their time at Caltech, the school psychologist took each woman side to ask if they had "lost their identity." The Biology Department at Caltech has experienced rapid growth in just a few decades. Back in 1951, all of Biology was housed in Kerckhoff Laboratory and a cluster of small plant laboratories on the north side of San Pasqual. Back then, all science majors at Caltech were required to take Bil. The importance of DNA was just beginning to be appreciated, and the function of RNA was unknown. Since then, Biology has expanded to include research conducted in not only Kerckhoff, but also Alles, the Beckman Institute, Beckman Behavioral Biology, Braun and Church laboratories. Bil has returned; now all students must take it to graduate. Requirements involving biochemistry, genetics, and neurobiology insure that biology majors are well prepared in their field when they graduate from Caltech. Many undergraduates have the opportunity to take Bi22, which allows them to receive research units for doing research with a professor of their choice. One of the most significant events has been the increasing emphasis on neuroscience, which now represents about half the effort of the division. The Chemistry Department at Caltech has a long history of excellence in education and research. Annual ponding of Professor Nate "Fozzie" Lewis in Millikan Pond by his Chem1a students on his birthday (luckily enough in the middle of the first term) has become a tradition. Although Caltech has long had a reputation for excellence in chemistry in the areas of molecular structure and chemical bonding, the focus of Chemistry has been shifting both toward materials chemistry and to links between biological sciences and chemistry. Professor Lewis has met some success in his work developing an electronic "nose:" a device which distinguishes objects by their odor. Starting off with only the Gates and Crellin Laboratories in 1953, the Chemistry department soon expanded to Church, Noyes, and Braun Laboratories. The completion of Beckman Institute in 1989 increased laboratory and office space and provided state of the art science facilities for the growing department. The prestige of the department was evident when Dr. Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 and the Peace Prize in 1962, and furthered when Dr. Rudy Marcus became a Nobel Laureate in 1992. - Dr. Nate Lewis and Dr. J. Numerous positive changes have occurred in the Athletics Department, most notably the design, construction, and opening of the state-of-the-art Braun Athletic Center in 1992 with its new weight room, fitness concourse, racquetball and squash courts, and new gymnasium. Whether vocalist or instrumentalist, interested in classical or jazz, the music program offers the Caltech student many choices. The Music Program at Caltech consists of the Caltech-Occidental Orchestra, Concert Band, Monday and Thursday Jazz Bands, Men's and Women's Glee Clubs, Chamber Singers, the diverse chamber music groups and Guitar. The husband and wife team of William and Delores Bing direct bands and chamber music respectively. Don Caldwell directs the Men's Glee Club and the smaller Chamber Singers, whle Monica Hubbard leads the Women's Glee Club in song. 44 Faculty Humanities e Social Sciences Humanities: (I-t) Oscar Mandel, Catherine Jurca, Kevin Gilmartin, Cindy Weinstein, T. Kevin Flamming, George Pigman, Ron Bush, Phil Hoffman, Dan Kevles, Jim Woodward, Peter Fay, James Lee. Most of the students at Caltech underestimate the Humanities and Social Sciences departments - yet they are the broadest of Caltech's divisions, ranging from American literature to sociology. The Humanities department offers classes in many foreign languages: French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Latin, and Greek. Of course, for some Techers, English literature is enough. Jenijoy La Belle's Shakespeare class is always eagerly awaited. To complete the Social Studies requirements, students choose from classes in antropolgy, political science, psychology, and economics. Upper-level classes are also offered. Other popular classes offered by the division have included British Science Fiction, History of Los Angeles, and Belief, Truth and Knowledge. Caltech also offers a unique degree in Science, Ethics and Society. The department was much different - there was even a comprehensive exam to be passed at the end of sophomore year to continue on in the division! The ME department has continued to fame - the famous ME72 contest held 46 Faculty annually at Beckman Auditorium has been televised nationally. The contest allows students the opportunity to use their engineering knowledge to design their own machines. Although the Mechanical Engineering Department was not established until 1987, it has already made significant contributions in both research and education of students. - Dr. Allan J. At a first glance, floorball is reminiscent of hockey, since each player is equipped with a stick which he or she uses to get a ball (not a puck) into a small goal. Floorball is much less violent than hockey, though; less even than soccer or basketball when played at comparable skill levels. The sticks are very light-weight, as is the ball, which makes the game very fast-paced, and an excellent, safe alternative or compliment to step aerobics or other highly aerobic sports. If you have played soccer or hockey, you should have a slight advantage when starting out in floorball, since the tactics are similar, but even with no experience it's fairly easy to get started. Since players wear nothing more than regular gym clothes and sneakers when playing, you already have everything you need to come and try it out with the rest of us; sticks, balls and goals are provided. We in the Caltech Floorball Club hope that the coming year will be as successful as the one we just had, with lots of fun at weekly pickups and the occasional on-campus tournaments! An ensemble of 16 voices open only to students, the Chamber Singers present Renaissance entertainments in December on campus and thoughout the local area, participate with orchestra in the annual All-Mozart Concert every spring, and present an evening of musical theater in June. The ensemble has performed almost all of Mozart's choral literature, with other repertoire ranging from Purcell's "Aeneas & Dido" to Stravinsky's 'Mass." Groups 63 Anime Society The Caltech Anime Society is dedicated to showing and popularizing Japanese animation ("anime") to the Caltech community. Unbeknowst to most people in the West, Japan has a flourishing animation industry comparable in size and diversity to the Hollywood live-action film industry; in Japan anime is seen routinely in cinemas, prime-time television and direct-to-video releases. The Japanese view animation as a valid medium for storytelling of all sorts and for all audiences, in contrast to the Western perception that cartoons are "just for kids." Accordingly, there are large quantities of anime which feature plot complexity, character depth, and emotional content that many Westerners would never expect in a "cartoon." Moreover, many of the early anime titles to become popular in the West had considerable sexual content (since both live-action and anime are media for all ages, "adult" anime titles exist in Japan.) This has led some people to brand anime as a 64 Groups medium for perverts and weirdos, even though the adult titles comprise a small and avoidable percentage of the total output of the anime industry. Several natural barriers to anime acceptance also exist. First and foremost, becasue anime is made in Japan, it must be imported into the West to be viewed at all, making it rare and expensive relative to domestic releases. Also, since almost all anime use Japanese as their native language, few people int he West understand much of it without translation. Commercial firms exist that translate and domestically release anime titles, but until recently those efforts were considered a fringe market and even today the commercial over more than a fraction of the titles available. This has led to the anime fan community (largely based in academia) to translate many titles for its own use: while this can be faster than waiting for a commerical firm, the translations are scarce and often require knowing the right people to see at all. The Caltech Anime Society's mission is to overcome the availability barrier and to promote a balanced, realistic view of what anime is. The club holds weekly showings open to the community at large and maintains a growing library of titles available for loan to club members, as well as offering various forms of assistance for people who wish to buy anime-related merchandise for themselves. It is our hope that offering people a chance to see anime on their own terms will correct any negative stereotypes about the medium and start the word-of-mouth mechanism turning. Also, we hope that the audience will enjoy the titles we show as interesting, entertaining works in their own right. We have also worked with the Japanese language program here at Caltech to show a certain amount of untranslated material (often shows still running in Japan) as out-of-class language practice. Attendance at showings ranges from about half a dozen to well over thirty people, and over eighty people have put themselves on our mailing list, ample testament to the persuasive power of anime as an expressive, engaging medium. - Mark L. The group is open to anyone. We encourage people to grow spiritually and share their exciting faith. Weekly Bible studies are scheduled almost every night. Our fellowship-wide large group meetings were held Monday nights in Winnett Lounge, with a variety of fascinating speakers. Our outdoor adventures successfully began with the Y Hike, a popular one week trip to the mountains just before first term. Weekend hikes and mountain biking trips continued throughout the year. Caltech students also hits the trails this year for trail maintenance. Other community projects included Spokes for Hope, Christmas in April, three days working with Habitat for Humanity in place of our Alternative Spring Break, and much more. Every week we helped deliver food to homebound patients with AIDS in Project Angelfood. Students also tutored local high school students in our weekly program. On campus projects were very successful this yearl, including the ever popular Decompression, which many students volunteer for every term. The Y also put on its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Turkey Trot. International Day, held during Pre-Frosh Weekend, was extremely popular, attracting students with the lure of treats from around the world. The Y has also helped to sponsor many events at Caltech, including Semana Latina, Black History Month events, poetry and play readings, a movie shown by its director, and many others. The Caltech co-ed soccer team began this year with many prospects, but as the season progresed, its roster eventually diminished to a dedicated group of teammates who were alway sfull of optimism, spirit, and beverage incentives. ("Come on guys, we can win this one.") We were handed several defeats, but although the issue of running up the score only came up against the alumni team, we did have many close games that didn't show up in our 0-for-whatever record. Our schedule doesn't show the time Ron actually paid Denise for being on the pizza list, or the time we actually had fans at an away game, or the time we beat the cross-country team at water polo. I guess you can only ask for so much information when you read a statistic. The core group now play for the GSC 74 Athletics team - the Wu Dogs - and next season we'll be losing such talented players as Anil Roopnarine, Albert Ramirez, and captain and co-MVP Clay Kishiyama, which means the alumni game is going to be tough. We still have a team of superstars including Francisco Dias-Lourenco and Matt Barnet. Frankie was our Maradona wannabe and Mat, our other MVP, was otherwise known as "The Wall." Yeah, the O-for-n record (where n is arbitrarily large) doesn't show our two MVP's being nominated for All-Conference or anything else particularly impressive. During the exciting 1996-97 season, the Caltech Ice Hockey team posted a division record of 4-8. As part of the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association (PCHA) Division Il league, the Beavers faced rivals such as University of California Davis, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State, University of California San Diego, Long Beach State and Santa Clara University. In addition to the league games, this season also featured an exhibition game against Loyola Marymount College. This special match was played at the Los Angeles Forum following the Los Angeles Kings-Edmonton Oilers game. The Beavers prevailed over Loyola Marymount with a final score of 7-5. This year's Caltech Beaver Ice Hockey team was led by player and coach Pavel Svitek, who scored the most points this season. Svitek's linemates were Roger McPherson and Steve Chase. McPherson was new comer to the team, while Chase completed his four year undergraduate career this year. The other forwards, veterans Mike Slessor, Max Lyutikov, John Anderson and Junior Sean Suchter, also played solid hockey behind the first line. New to the team, Hannah Dvorak and Nathan Good also contributed in their forward positions. Guarding the net, Frank Monzon was the #1 goalie, capturing all four of the wins. He was supported by the defense, which was anchored by the physical play of Senior Mark Stewart, Jon Hodowany, Biff Yamazaki and new comer Chris Jones. The team has also been greatly aided by the play of Chris Claypool and Hafen McCormick, who demonstrated their flexibility by playing both forward and defense positions. The season was capped by the Beaver Cup on March 2. In this annual event the Caltech Beaver team battles the MIT Beaver Alumni team. After coming off a 3-3 tie in the previous year, the Caltech team unfortunately suffered a 5-0 loss. However, this event is the most popular, drawing on one of the school's greatest rivalries. Athletics 77 Volleyball Great serving has been an important part of this record season. 1891 After a powerful attack, the Beavers stand ready to face their opponents return. 78 Athletics The Caltech Women's Volleyball Team had a record breaking season in the fall of 1996. They finished the season with an overall record of 6-11 (9-16 tournament). This is the best record the team has ever recorded. The Beavers earned much repect from their opponents, giving every team they faced a run for their money in many close games. The 15 member team was captained by senior Jennifer Holland and junior Grace Yang. During the season, all players exhibited hard work and commitment. Practice attendance was incredibly high and the players always gave 100%. Grace Yang, a setter, was voted by her teammates as the Most Valuable Player of the season. She broke seven school records--most assists, digs and service for points in a season and most assists, digs, service for points, and ace serves in a career. Jennifer Holland, an outside hitter, broke the school record for most kills in a season and most kills in a career. The four regular players, Kyle Stickle, Clay Kishiyama, Kazu Nakada and Nick Lorenzen, performed well and Kyle made All-Conference (second team) and won Caltech's annual J. Ben Earl Golf Trophy. Josh Moats came out after basketball and helped us avoid some forfeits. The team scoring average (358) was quite respectable, especially considering that we were competing with the minimum four players and our opponents could use their best four out of six. Though finishing last in conference this year we were very competitive with Pomona and Whittier, and, with the addition of two very strong players for next year should match up well with all conference schools. The team MVP was Kyle Stickle, and Kyle and Kazu will be the team co-captains for next year. After spinning them around, only 26 remained. Their ignoble failure in the Lounge Run upset the Master, and all were dispatched before finals. Second term breezed in and brought elections with it. Apathy was beaten back for a while with eleven candidates vying for President, and numerous choices for all other offices. (Social team wannabes: "Our plan is to take the entire year's social budget to Vegas and put it all on black...") With Interhovse fast approaching, the scourge of courtyard cleanliness was also dealt a blow, as lumber, power tools, and a small forest worth of bamboo were converted into a giant mess, and eventually to a two story volcano in a full jungle setting, featuring bridges around a flooded courtyard and a waterfall off the 5A balcony. Somehow, seven thousand pounds of concrete were purchased for Interhovse but never used. Not wanting to waste them, the frosh moved the concrete up to Hell, working it all into the first and last Infinite Time Hell Ride.
