But on the contrary, the student activities at Caltech are as numerous and diverse as the students themselves. In fact, the activities and traditions here at Caltech are the things that keep most of us going by providing a necessary respite from homework. One year round student activity is in-terhouse sports. Interhouse sports involves the friendly competition between houses in basketball, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee. For those of us who are not quite adverturous enough for KELROF, there is the weekly ASCIT movie to en-joy. However, the activity which by far attracts the most attention (including the me-dia's) and student participation during the year is Ditch Day. The latest and most successful version of Tech's women's Crosss Country team had by all accounts a fantastic WINNING SEASON! This was the first time in history that we have man-aged to rack up more wins than losses. Coach O'Brien commented, "This is the first year in my ten years here at Caltech that the women have stepped it up to a whole new competitive level. Our SCIAC opponents couldn't take us for granted any longer and we managed to strike fear in their hearts. They hate losing to Caltech!" The absolute highlight of the year was when sophomore sensation CAILIN HENDERSON qualified for and competed at the NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS at Lehigh Uni-versity in Bethlehem, PA. Henderson also claimed 1st Team ALL CONFERENCE honors placing 7th and also placed 4th at the NCAA Regional Meet. Caltech had never sent a woman to Cross Country Nationals before, so history was made. The team finished the season with 8 wins against 6 losses, placing Sth in the SCIAC out of 8 schools. Then at the NCAA Regional Meet the team finished with a flourish by placing 6th of 11 teams, our highest finish to date. The individual highlights were many. GINGER GARCIA, a senior, closed out her XC career by staking claim to the #3 spot midway through the season Garcia finished up having lettered in each of her 4 years and earned the "Most Improved" award. Nine dedicated athletes spent six weeks on the court pushing themselves to their limits every day. This year the team had only two scrimmages and two official games. But both games were huge crowd pleasers and the ladies finished at 1 - 1. All nine players played a significant role on the team and saw ample playing time. This year's team consisted of Senior Co-Captain Sharon Grelecki, Junior Co-Captain Angie Bealko, Senior Heather Gibble, Juniors Aimee Quan and Lily Chang, Sophomore Ellis Meng, and Freshmen Katie Stofer, Irene Wong, and Lori Hsu. Despite their short season, these women put forth a lot of dedication towards making this inaugural season one to remember. Coaches Cathy and Jeff Monteroso performed miraculous wonders for the Lady Beavers considering the small amount of time with which they were left. Athletics 29 The 1994-1995 year marked a major transition for the men's volleyball club. In previous years, the main focus was on U.S. Volleyball Association competition where the club played at the A and then AA levels. This year, with the coaching debut of Aaron Kiely, who had joined previously as a player, the club concentrated on intercollegiate matches against powerhouses such as Pomona-Pitzer, Cal Poly Pomo-na, and Claremont-McKenna's varsity and club teams. The team also had many new faces this season. With several old starters having left, the club was faced with the challenge of recruiting new members to fill the va-cancies. The fall tryouts proved to be a rousing success, as 5 of the new members became regulars on the starting lineups. The team was also able to generate a deep enough field in each position that the loss of a starter did not seriously reduce the team's competitiveness. Athletics 31 Junior Jon Wesselmann captured second team AIl-SCIAC honors to highlight the 1995 Caltech baseball season. Wesselmann also picked up the MVP award for the 5-23 Beavers (0-21 SCIAC), leading the team in hits (33) and batting average (.333). This year's team featured an incredible seven freshmen, including five starters. Rob Try-on led the group as he won the Outstanding Freshmen award, while Tony Tran received a Coaches' Award for his consistent play in the outfield. Catcher Adil Karim was the Most Improved Player in 1995 while Anthony Gonzalez won Defensive Player of the Year along with a three-year letterman award. Brian Cooper won a Captain's Award and a four-year letterman award. With such a large group of young talent coming back (only five seniors are leaving), the prospects for a successful campaign next year are promising. Mike Greene (Jr.) broke the twenty seven year record of the legendary Henry DeWitt in the 50 yard freestyle. Mike's time of 21.61 seconds shattered the previous record of 21.8. Mike Greene now owns both of DeWitt's records in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Liz Callagan (Fr.) was winning the 3m Diving event over 9 other divers and placed a solid second on the lm diving board. The last Caltech woman to win that event was Clare Waterson back in 1985. Caltech's Phil Rodrique (Fr.) earned a second on the 3m board and a third at the lm level. This year's squad took a major step forward into the School Record Books with a previously unequalled 22 wins, 10 losses. The athletes proved that they could answer the challenges of SCIAC oponnents, NAIA teams, Junior Col-leges, and even Concordia College from Moorehead, MN. Despite the strength of the team in dual meet situations, we were only able to climb up to 6th place in the Conference. Leading the way was freshman Dan Kleiman who scored 16 of the team's 22 points at the chmapionship meet. Along with Kleiman, Matt Metz was All- Conference in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles and 1600m Relay, Ron Stieger in the 800m, 400m Relay and 1600m Relay, freshman Tim Yarnall in the Pole Vault, freshman Evan Reed in the 400m Relay, and Rob Bergeron and Art Greenberg on both Relays. At the annual Awards Dinner, Dan Kleiman was the team MVP, winning the Goldsworthy Track Trophy and Golden Ankle Dedication Award. Matt Metz and Karl Thulin shared the M.T. Davis award for field events. Ron Stieger won the Most Valuable Runner and Matt Metz won Outstanding Dual Meet Athlete. The siren song of this year's team was individual excellence. Despite having a small group to work with, the team was able to win a few meets in the early season and then go on to perfecting our individual talents the rest of the way. Although the team posted 6 wins and 22 losses this year, several of the women were able to establish themselves as forces to be reckoned with in the SCIAC Con-ference. Senior Team Captain Ginger Garcia set a new school record for 10,000m and garnered All-Conference recognition on both the 400m Relay and 1600m Relay. Her running mates on those relays were Cailin Henderson, Gretchen Larson, and freshman Karen Bletzer. In addition, Henderson took 4th place in the 3000m for an additional All-Conference award. Amy Oldenburg finished out her Track career in style! She finished 2nd in the SCIAC Discus, and 4th in the Javelin for two All-Conference berths. Oldenburg also placed 7th in the Hammer and set new School Records in both the Hammer and the Javelin and leaves Caltech with 4 records (Discus and Heptathlon also). Both Cailin Henderson and Amy Oldenburg share the honor of Outstanding Track Athlete this year. Oldenburg was also the Outstanding Dual Meet Athlete; Henderson the Most Valuable Runner. Led by senior Captain Chandra Das and senior David Park, the Beavers finished in a tie for sixth in the SCIAC Conference. The Beavers were suprisingly competitive this year considering that their 3 (junior Amir Alagheband), 4 (freshman Ronak Bhatt), 5 (freshmen Jason Jenkins and sophomore Carlos Maldonado) and 6 (freshman Ben Miller) were all first year players. Senior Mike Zeineh played a limited schedule with veteran junior Atul Salvekar (playing at 5 or 6 singles) rounding out the squad. Freshman Dazhi Chen made great strides during the season and will play a greater role next year. Chandra was named team MVP and Amir and Atul were elected Co-Captains forthe '95-96 seaSon The team posted wins over Biola, Whittier, and La Verne this year and lost 5-4 to Occidental in a key match for fifth in the conference. With Chandra, David, and Mike graduating, the returning team members augmented by some fine incoming Frosh and the possible return of ace Albert Ramirez, will be challenged to have comparable season. Coach Mike Jackson announced his retirement from coaching term at the end of the season ending a fifteen year reign. he will continue to lead the Golf team while teaching Sports Psychology. 38 Athletics This year was another record-breaking year as it again marked the most successful year for Caltech Women's Tennis. This special group of 11 athletes overcame adversity to finish 7-7 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC, with wins over Occidental, La Verne, and Whittier. Tech's 5-3 win over Oxy on March 9 marked the Beavers' first win over the Tigers in the team's history. Senior June Fujimoto and freshman Alexis Johnson finished the dual match season in 5th place and took St place in the conference tournament, giving them a solid Sth place finish in the conference, the highest finish ever for the Caltech Tennis Team. Led by All-Conference Seniors Tim Nelson and Erik Wasinger, the Beavers completed their finest season in twenty-five years. Among the many successes were: 1) A team victory over the entire conference at the challenging Hacienda Country Club. No Beaver team has ever before defeated the entire conference in a team competition. Erik was conference medalist in this tournament (a first) with freshman Kyle Stickle tied for a second (the best tournament finish by a freshman on record). 2) Defeating five of the other seven conference teams in dual matches. In the previous fifteen years the Beavers had won two and lost one-hundred and nine-ty-three. 3) Two players made All-Conference (a first). Additional accomplishments made by the Beavers were numerous. Tim was the team medalist for four straight years (a first), Kyle's 80.4 average for the year was the lowest freshman average on rec-ord. Senior Jason Trevor was an outstanding Captain, putting in selfless hours to see that the team was prepared. Junior Blair Essy amd Sophomore Clay Kishiyama fought out of their early season slumps, finishing strong and, along with promising freshman Kazu Nakada, will be key members of next year's team. Seniors Erik Wasinger was the first Caltech conference medalist at the Hacienda Country Club tour-nament. 40 Athletics FEAR THE BEAVER. Emblazoned across the T-shirts made for Caltech's winningest intercollegiate team, it is good advice for those schools, such as Long Beach, Stan-ford, UCLA, and Air Force Acad-emy, unfortunate enough to have to face a Caltech student from the other end of their blade, for none of them have had any success in stopping this fearsome fencing ma-chine. This year's team was a team of firsts. 1994-95 was the first year Caltech has fielded an all veteran Men's Foil team. And although this was the second year Caltech fielded a Women's epee team, it was the first year that other schools followed suit. The successful team took 3rd place in the entire conference this year. Also taking 3rd place in the conference (NCAA Division I conferences) was our women's foil team, led for the second year by their team captain, Rhon-da, who graduates this year. Sabre team captain Kevin Boyce graduated this year also, after leading the Sabre team to 4 consecutive ist place conference finishes and two NCAA Western Division Sabre Championships. In addition to this, Kevin's collegiate record stands at 167-3, and after winning the conference individual title 4 years in a row, winning the Division individual title 4 years in a row, and being selected to go to NCAA nationals 4 years in a row (where he was chosen All Amer-ican), the rest of the sabre fencers were glad to see him go. Taking second place only to Kevin in the conference this year was sophomore Austin Collins, and taking 5th place in the Division was junior Anatole Faykin. The Men's epee team will be comprised of several veterans next year, all with a desire to make the opposition (and "Spider") eat steel. And how will we do this? "With heart, faith, and steel..." With over one hundred mem-bers, the club started off the year by sponsoring a barbecue to welcome the incoming freshmen and holding a workshop on writing business plans. Some of the guest speakers who came and shared their experiences with the Caltech community were Compaq Chairman and alumnus Ben Rosen, The first Caltech Director of Technology Transfer Larry Gilbert, and entrepreneur and alumnus Milton Chang. In April, seven students had the opportunity to attend the Harvard Business School's Entrepreneurs Conference at the Irvine Hyatt Regency. The club is also putting together the SEE (Summer Entrepreneurial Experience), a summer internship in industry to help students gain exposure in the entrepreneurial world and learn management skills. In addition, club members enjoyed the benefit of attending the Caltech/MIT forums, sponsored by Industrial Relations, free of charge. All this would not have been possible without the following people. BUSIN ENTREPRENEURS CONFERENCF 48 Groups The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the largest professional organization in the world. The Caltech IEEE Student Branch was founded in 1993 to provide an organization for students in electrical engineering, computer science, applied physics, and other related fields at Caltech. It is dedicated to strengthening the relationship between students and faculty members and informing its members of job, research, and educational opportunities. Undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty are all encouraged to become involved. The Caltech IEEE Student Branch provides many opportunities for its members. The monthly EE social hour was begun this year to provide an opportunity for students and faculty to interact in an informal environment. Guest speakers helped students to learn about some of the current research being done in electrical engineering, so that they may have a better idea what fields they may be interested in. The student branch also provides a structure within which new students may find upperclassmen with similar interests who can assist them in deciding what major to choose, which classes to take, and other questions which may arise. TEEE CCF The Caltech Christian Fellowship is an interdenominational group composed of those on the Caltech campus who share in the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ and the hope of his second coming. The House Bible studies took on a new twist as some houses were combined for study. Large Group meetings, also called Fun and Fellowship, were held every Tuesday night in Winnett Lounge with a variety of speakers and activities. The Fishline is published weekly as a newsletter for the group Prayer continues to be an important focus of the group. There are also quite a number of other activities, such as a retreat, planned every term. Second term we also planned a pancake breakfast for the campus Some people have chosen to participate in outreaches to Pasadena. The street ministry team was out biweekly on Friday nights, and began a science demonstration and testimony outreach in Old Pasadena. On alternate weeks the hallway ministry group visited Plaza Del Mar, a nearby retirement home. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. There are no auditions, no selection process - if you enjoy singing and are willing to put in three hours per week, you're in. All members get a voice placement and the opportunity to have free half-hour lessons once a week. The music that is sung is of a wide variety. First term this year was devoted to some unusual Christmas music consisting of Walter Matthias' "Salvator Mundi" comprised of 15th century Christmas carols, and Daniel Pinkham's wonderful "Christmas Cantata" sung with the Men's Repertory Camps held at various old and Glee Club. Stephanie Ream, a student from Occidental Colege, was a featured saxophone soloist, and Paul Asimow, a graduate student at Caltech, was a regular guest conductor. 56 Groups Jazz Band The Caltech Jazz Bands, of which there are two, released their first CD this year. Entitled "Exothermic Jazz," a name given to the CD by graduate student Jean-Paul Davis, has been selling well, and is available at the Caltech bookstore. The jazz bands also have scheduled performances at the local jazz club, "the Baked Potato." The master was pleased early, we got a cool frosh, Michelle hatched and blessed with a beautiful baby, our sports record was much better than last year, we had a soggy In-terhovse, and a great Ditch Day. In all it was a pretty good year. They even increas the historian budget, which was kind of nice, Mike is enjoying the surplus in Las Vegas as I write this (come on twenty one). Lots of cool things happened over the past year. We had a real interhouse party. Steuben house became part of DabneyCorp. We got a new hot tub, and even won the disco trophy (however briefly). The really great parts of living in Dabney though, can't be described so easily. Mostly, it's the everyday things, like sleeping in the lounge by the fire, or, alternatively, seeing the sun rise after staying up all night. Things like hanging out in the Alley 7 kitchen or the library, and flicking because the work wasn't getting done anyway. Best of all were the rare quiet times, when a person could feel content, and at peace with the world. May there be more in the years to come. After the erection of a six foot high tower of toilet paper, and the relocation of Lloyd House's lounge furniture, the new Frosh pandered to Rob's desires, and acquired him a new pet fish from Baxter Pond. Juniors Ex-Comm Fleming 91 dominating early in Softball, Soccer, and Swim-ming, Fleming jumped to an early lead in In-terhouse competition. During softball season, Fleming was undefeated thanks to pitching by seniors Art Greenberg and Brian Cooper, who held the other houses to a total of 28 runs, while the offense racked up 129 runs. In Soccer, frosh Jorge Palamara by himself outscored the other houses, 17-14. Second term began with a blowout in Track and Field, with Art Greeneberg and sophomore Gretchen Larson garnering Athletes of the Meet honors, senior Amy Oldenburg smashing shotput record, and numerous other outstanding finishes. Ultimate season brought a surprise loss to Blacker as well as tough loss to page, so Fleming finished in third, 4-2-0. Despite a freak loss to Blacker, Fleming managed to tie LIllllllloyd for first in Interhouse Volleyball, leaving us leading page by 20 points, still in good positioning to bring home the trophy after Basketball, Tennis, and Football third term. As for Disco, Fleming was first on the list to challenge last year's winners, pa. A close 13-12 win in Softball brought the trophy home. Fleming held through Ricketts (Volleyball), Whak-a-Darb, Blacker (Ultimate), and Lloyd (Football). A loss to Ruddock in football caused the departure of trophy for a few weeks. Second term Fleming's turn to challenge came up again, but this time our luck did not hold as we lost to Lloyd in Volleyball, 15-12, 15-12. But Fleming still holds the advantage with 17 points. Third term Fleming will challenge again, this for the title. Flems were also successful on the ice, winning the Y's broomball tournament first term and coming in second place second term. There was even enough interest to field an all-frosh team second term. Finally, this year saw the advent of a new competition, Crisco. Although houses can challenge at any time, Fleming basically boycotted Crisco, except for the par-sponsored Frisbee Golf tour-ament. Ricketts 133 Even at the very start, this year in Scurve-Land seemed to exude a singular charm, a unique glimmer, an unusual feel. Undoubtedly, these sensations were due to the paint fumes and overwhelming nature of the brilliant new colors that Ricketts House was painted as a result of renovations — for which many a Scurve labored diligently during last summer (opposite page). Nevertheless, the notion that the year would be filled with memorable events certainly came true. Along with traditional events such as the Tour of Showers and House Meetings, the rebirth of Alley Challenges took place. The Alley Challenges this year included "Rolling Donuts for Distance and Style" between Up-Your and Crud, "Running into a Wall for Style" between Cherry and L.D., and "(In) Drag Racing" which occurred between Crud and L.D. Alleys (below). For a few days during Spring Break, Prof. Joe Kirschvink - Ricketts House's new NREA — took many Scurves camping on a beach in Baja (right). On a sadder note, Ricketts House received news of the unexpected death of Eric Candell — a Ricketts House alumnus whom the Seniors knew well (opposite page).
