He taught me to have reverence for the value of wood, and together we recycled several old buildings and gave them new lives. Though he has passed on now, I am sure that he would vote yes on Proposition 130, the Forests Forever Initiative if he could. I am working for passage of 130 because I want my children to have healthy environment and places to get away from the problems of the big city from time to time. Like deforestation in the rainforests of Brazil, logging in the Pacific Northwest contributes global environmental damage. If you are in favor of global warming then the timber industry's Proposition 138 is the initiative for you, because it locks in Big Timber's control over forest practices for at least another decade-time enough to cut down the last of the giants. The courses will also be changed, from the six levels of Physics and three levels of Biology and Chemistry, to more introductory science courses and math classes. He also wishes to introduce some physical education classes and possibly even field more carefully. Overall, Eduardo has some big plans for everyone. Eddie wants to be friends with the undergraduates. He really wants to help and get involved. He has already picked up on a couple of the problems the undergrads are having, but it is a skewed view-point. He has met many frosh, but not many upperclassmen, so some of the problems he has heard of may be long forgotten by most up-perclassmen. Eduardo likes to ask questions though and he sten well. Debate from page 2 When we started organizing this debate, we asked everyone for a written statement of their positions Paul Gautreau, candidate for Atty Gen: I, like most Californi-ans, demand to be safe at home and the streets. I would like all Californians to be healthy and free of drug dependancy. laws which criminalize drug use simply do not help; in fact, they just make things worse... While no one denies the high cost of drug abuse, more and more the experts are agreeing that the "war on drugs" can never be won If legalized, drugs would be considerably less expensive on the open market that they are on the black market. With the price of the market declining dramatically, the opportunity for huge profits would be negligible.... Drug users and addicts could support their habits with honest work rather than the commission of crimes such as rob-bery, burglary, and theft Moreover, the Government could control the purity and marketing of drugs which would proscribe the sale of adulterated drugs that have caused infury and death. The provision of sterile, safe paraphrena-lia to drug users would be a way of preventing the spread social diseases such as AIDS. ....In short, individuals ought to have the right to decide for themselves what to put in their own bodies, so long as they take responsibility for their actions. Eduardo thinks there are some things that need to be changed and that is why he accepted the offer. He sees the present enrollment at Caltech many years behind the rest of the country and he wormes about the possible lack of engineers in the near future. He applauds the present programs that have recently been employed to get more minority and women students. He also has some plans for his new home. Although the Beavers came out of the meet with sore behinds, there were a number of bright spots in favor of the hapless harriers. First, the conference as a whole is much, much stronger than it was last year. Occidental, stung by last year's defeat to Tech, went on a wild recruiting spree this summer and came up with a ridiculously strong squad of Masochists this year (these running machines swept the first four spots at the meet with four times that all broke the previous conference record on the La Mirada course!) Secondly, Whittier College had, simply, a Cinderella story sea-son. Whittier, last year's conference Spanky, jumped to second place in the conference meet this year. Amidst all this intense com-petition, for the Beavers to have finished higher up than they did this would have been a tall order. The brightest spot in the meet for Caltech had a name. That name was Terminator. Yes, Dan Flees was certainly not a Spanky in any sense of the word. Flees powered through the 8k course to finish in a Phenomenal time of 27:19, good for 14th place. The top 20 in the race receive all-conference honors, so Dan will be the recepient of an all-conference certificate. Scott Kister (28:25) and Chris Campo (28:59) turned in respectable performances, by last year's conference standards, but placed 26th and 29th this year with those times. Freshman Andy Zug, dubbed "Zug the Slug" by mate Mark Lyttle, finished in 34th place with a time of 29:19. Zug's solid performance hints of great things to come from him next year, and perhaps at this year's upcoming Regional meet "I went out too fast," commented Mark Lyttle regarding his time of 30:28, good for 37th place. Mark's sidekick this season, sophomore Jonah Michaud (or is Mark Jonah's sidekick?) finished close to Mark as usual; 38th place with a time of 30:35. Aaron Matzner, Tech's usual frontrunner, experienced severe pain in his thigh early in the race. Aaron dropped out with my bless 1ng, commented Coach Jim O'Brien. "He's going to be focusing on qualifying for NCAA Nationals at the upcoming Regional Meet. He's got bigger fish to fry." At the conference meet, each team must designate seven runners to be the scoring runners for that team. The rest of the runners compete out of uniform and have no effect on the score of the meet; these runners are simply running achieve a personal season best. All of Tech's non-scoring runners put in a good effort. The three best performances were given by sophomore Win Chamberlain (31:01), Freshman Ned Bowden (31:37) and senior John Pham (32:47). At the Regional Meet, held next Saturday in Bonelli Park, each team is allowed to enter only seveen run- Because of this, Coach O'Brien has decided to keep the top six Beavers from the conference meet, plus Aaron, working out. The top three nonscoring finishers for Tech will continue working out as alternates. The Women The women ran a 5k course at La Mirada, and were also the Spankys of the conference (139). The Beavers had their tails slapped by Oxy (25), Pomaona Pit-zer (35), Whittier (81), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and (80). Tech was at least better than the two Super-Spankys of the confer-ence: Redlands and La Verne (in-complete teams.) The star performer for the women was speedy sophomore Amy Hansen. Coach O'Brien was confident that Hansen could put in a bid for an all-confernece finish (top 20), and so told members of the men's team to move around the course constantly updating Amy on her place in the race "With 600 meters to 0, she still needed to vass two runners," O'Brien recalled. "She ran a gutsy race and passed them to finish 20th in the conference." Hansen's time was 21:56. Aimee Smith, strong second Like the men, the women had a number OT non-scoring par- ticipants at the race. The two best performances by nonsconn Beavers were given by Gretchen Mullendore 25:17 Haldeman (25:40) and Jessie Regional Meet Concerning the regional meet, Coach O'Brien said," I want to see people bearing down and really go ing for it." He ran at 5:40 mile pace (I timed him) for the "easy warmup laps" prior to cross-country practice everyday. 2. He ran at speeds faster thatn 6:20 minutes per mile on several "easy road run" days. 3.
